Two perspectives Doug. Terrific character development. Engaging dialog and intriguing. premise.. I'm captivated enough to want to hear "the rest of the story"..
The second perspective is from the business point of view. In my 40 years of consulting with small l and mid size, closely held companies, family owned and otherwise, the lack of preparation for things like sudden death or overly ambitious tariffs is legendary.
Yes indeed. Thanks for your comments richard. That text was edited significantly since the post. And it’s now published. I agree with your second point. Deaths often serve to catalyze change, including succession planning. That’s sometimes why I’m hired.
A related trigger are those fears that define our behaviors. Do we fear losing assets, reputation, identity, ownership changes? Any of those could open the next book…
Thanks very much for your kind words! I'm delighted that you want to hear more... perhaps I'll post the next 10 pages. The first draft is being professionally edited. I'm working on book 2 now.
Yes, the lack of preparation is legendary and often terrifying. Minutes ago I had a conversation with a G3 leader who stated "Daddy always told us to repair the roof when the sun is shining. Not when the storms hit. But we never did so."
In your decades of consulting I'm sure that you have similar stories!
One reason for sharing this fictional approach to that LACK of preparation is to encourage family business leaders of any age to prepare for the stormy weather ahead.
I encourage you to share or forward any of this thread!
